Website Columns Often Contain More Variation Than They Appear To

A bulk file may include http://, https://, www, bare domains, location pages, tracking links, old redirects, and URLs copied from search results. They may all open in a browser, but they are not equally useful as permanent directory destinations.

Resolve the preferred destination first

Open the link and see where it finishes. If an old HTTP URL always redirects to the current HTTPS location, store the final preferred address where possible rather than publishing a chain of redirects.

For branch listings, confirm whether the correct destination is the homepage or a dedicated location page.

Remove tracking that does not belong in the permanent record

Campaign parameters can expire, clutter the visible URL, or send analytics into the wrong channel. A stable directory link should normally use the clean destination unless a deliberate tracking policy exists.

Detect domains that no longer belong to the business

Old websites can be sold, parked, or reused. A URL that still returns a page is not automatically valid. Compare the destination with the business identity before keeping it.

Normalise without flattening meaningful paths

Do not turn every link into a homepage simply because it looks cleaner. A branch, booking, menu, or service page may be the correct destination for that listing.

URL cleanup is about permanence and relevance. The best link is the one that reliably takes the directory visitor to the official page that matches the profile they just read.

URL cleanup should protect the destination, not just the format

Removing spaces or adding https:// can make a URL syntactically cleaner without proving that it reaches the right page. A bulk URL review should test redirects, obvious domain typos, tracking links, retired subdomains, and pages that return errors. Where a business has several locations, confirm that the link belongs to the correct branch rather than defaulting every record to the corporate homepage.

Keep redirects that are intentional, but avoid storing a long redirect chain when the final canonical destination is known. A clean website field should take a customer to a live, relevant page with as little ambiguity as possible. Formatting is only the first layer of that check.
